Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Solomon Arase, has ordered police commanding officers to beef up security around key and vulnerable installations in their jurisdictions ahead of the May 29 inauguration.According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), this was contained in a statement issued yesterday by the police spokesman, Mr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, in Abuja.
The IGP specifically ordered zonal AIGs and Commissioners of Police in the states to take steps to protect critical infrastructure like mega filling stations, major hotels, national/state Houses of Assembly and the Eagle Square.
He stated that the order became imperative to ward off possible plans by insurgents to carry out widespread violence and coordinated attacks on installations and public places ahead of May 29 handover ceremonies.According to the statement, insurgents plan to undermine the presidential/governorship inauguration/swearing-in ceremonies nationwide. It, however, assured that the police had perfected strategies to provide security and ensure a hitch-free ceremony. The police advised members of the public to continue to collaborate with the force and other security agencies to stamp out crimes and terrorism
