Former President Olusegun Obasanjo tore an expired the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) membership card, not the authentic one most recently issued to him by the party.
The National Secretary of the PDP, Prof. Wale Oladipo, said this while receiving student union government leaders under the umbrella of the Student Mobilisation Network Group, (SMNG) who paid him a visit on Tuesday, Leadership reports.
According to Oladipo, Obasanjo is a 'very intelligent man' who manipulated the widely broadcasted dramatic card tearing.
"Baba is a very intelligent man.
“He asked somebody ostensibly to do the tearing and I am assuring you that the card that was torn was not the current PDP card," Oladipo said.
He alleged that the card Obasanjo had torn for him was issued by the immediate past Chairman of the Party, Abubakar Barage, and not the new one issued under the leadership of the current chairman, Dr Adamu Mu’azu.
"So the card he tore was a Barage card, which we were going to destroy anyway.”
The party scribe also suggested that the ex-president’s actions may be linked to his advanced age.
“Baba is over eighty and my mother is around Obasanjo’s age and when you reach that age, you do things that only you can explain."
Oladipo however added that Obasanjo's exit from the party is a win-win situation for the party because it would allow others to grow.
"You know when a big tree exits in a big forest, smaller trees cannot grow.
“If that big tree leaves, 10 to 20 smaller trees will grow. In politics one big tree has one vote, while twenty small trees have 20 votes.
"If you do the arithmetic, I am a scientist, I know that head or tail, it is a win-win situation for PDP.”
It will be recalled that Obasanjo had his membership card publicly destroyed on Monday February 16th.
A number of politicians have since taken the cue, tearing their membership cards in public.
