U.S. pressure made Nigeria’s transition peaceful, Buhari tells Obama

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday in Washington DC said that the continued pressure on the immediate past administration by the United States and some European countries made the general elections in Nigeria to be free and fair.

Buhari said this while responding to the welcome remarks by President Barack Obama, before the start of the bilateral meeting between officials of both countries at the Oval Office of the White House, Washington DC, on the second day of the visit.

He noted that without the external pressure, “we would not be where we are today in Nigeria”.Buhari-Obama

He recalled that the pressure started from the visit of the United States Secretary of State, John Kerry, to the then Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega.

“Nigeria will be ever grateful to President Obama and the United States for making Nigeria consolidate its gains on democracy,” Buhari said.

On his trip to the United States, the President said he looked forward to a fruitful visit and engagement with his host government.

3 months old infant dies on 1st day at allegedly unlicensed Day Care Center

An allegedly unlicensed New York City day care center is being investigated after an infant died on his first day under its care. Karl Towndrow, who was 3 months old, was found unresponsive 15 minutes after being put down for his midday nap Monday at SoHo Child Care in Manhattan, police said.

Day care center owner Maryellen Strautmanis called 911, and dispatchers talked her through the steps of CPR until first responders arrived, according to police. The cause of the baby’s death is unknown and no criminal charges have been filed.

“The parents are distraught, a little bit in shock, and they’re trying to get a handle on what happened,” John Tumelty, the family’s attorney, said.

“They want to find out what happened here. If they got a proper license and the reviews and the requirements were met, if it would be a different outcome, we don’t know yet.”

The center was shut down after Karl’s death, officials said.
The center is unlicensed and had been owned and operated by Strautmanis for the past 14 years, according to the New York State Office of Children and Family Services.

Unlicensed child care providers aren’t subject to basic training requirements and background checks. The exact number of unlicensed child care providers nationally isn’t known.
Lynette Fraga, executive director of the nonprofit Child Care Aware of America, says parents need to be vigilant when deciding on day care centers.

“There are three steps I would recommend that families consider when they are seeking out child care: call, visit and revisit,” Fraga said.

OAU lecturer assassinated by unknown gunmen

Gunmen on Tuesday night stormed the residence of a lecturer at the Department of Agricultural Economics of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Dr. Deji Adejobi, killing him in the process.

Punch reports that Adejobi was shot by his assailants who invaded his home close to the Tollgate area of Ile Ife.

Residents of the area said the gunmen, who stormed the residence around 10pm, shot into the air to scare away residents before firing their target. The deceased was said to be the older brother of the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Police Command, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi.

One of the children of the late don, Oyin, narrated amidst tears:

“We finished our evening prayer at 10:05pm when dad drove into the compound. Then I overheard an argument between the gateman and some  people. I quickly looked from the window and I saw another black car that entered our compound together with dad’s  car.

Our gateman was quizzing  the occupants of the other car but they hit him and ordered him to lie down. The men in the black car stepped out of their car before dad could alight from his and one of them shot into the air. Two of them moved  into dad’s  car while others came inside the house.”

She added that their grandma begged the gunmen, who went inside the house, but they heard gunshot from outside twice. She said further that the gunmen took away the car of the deceased around 10:20pm and she heard her late dad begging them not to whisk him away.

“We thought they took him away and we were praying for his safety without knowing that he had been killed,” she said.

According to her, the police team found Adejobi’s body where it was. Efforts to know if the police were aware of the case were unsuccessful as the Police Public Relations Officer in Osun State, Mrs. Folasade Odoro, dropped the call while our correspondent was asking him about the case.

But the Public Relations Officer of the OAU, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju, who confirmed the incident, said the university community was shocked to hear the news of the killing of the don.

He said, “We were shocked to hear that he was killed. We just pray God will give the family the fortitude to bear the loss. It is terrible.”

Why I chose Yar'Adua as my successor - Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says he chose late Yar'Adua as his successor because the other politicians available at that time were corrupt. According to him, one of those who wanted to succeed him was 'stinkingly corrupt'. He gave his reasons during an interview with Channels TV yesterday July 15th

"Even if you take your son as your successor, you are not sure of what he will do when he gets there. Don’t ever kid yourself. What do I know about any successor?

What he presents. When he gets there, he presents it differently. We did our best, but if you say our best is not good enough, I will say, when it comes to your turn, do better.

With all the people that are available for successor, what we came up with was about the best that we could think of at that time. One of those who wanted to do the job came to me and said, ‘Sir, I like your job, but I cannot do it the way you are doing it.’ Now, if he had told me that, should I then come and say, ‘okay, come, let me give you the job?’

He had told me that, ‘I like your job, but look, the way you are doing it, I haven’t got the stamina to do it that way.’ Then, what do you expect me to do? Or the one that I know that, oh!, this one, before he gets the job, he’s stinkingly corrupt.

Now will I be able to defend myself before God and man if with what I know I give this job or I encourage the man to have this job?”he said

INEC Warns Lawmakers Against Defecting

The Deputy Director, Public Affairs of INEC, Nick Dazang, yesterday said that the constitution is clear on the position the commission will take in such situation.

Dazang said the provision is specific on what happens if a lawmaker leaves from one political party to another.

Section 109 (g) of the amened 1999 Constitution states that, a member of the legislature shall vacate his seat in the House if “being a person whose election to the House…was sponsored by a political party, he becomes a member of another political party before the expiration of the period of which that House was elected.”

The section also, gives a provison, that: “Provided that his membership of the latter political party is not as a result of a division in the political party of which he was previously a member or of a merger of two or more political parties or factions by one of which he was previously sponsored.”

Last year the Supreme Court, reportedly ruled that a member of House of Representatives representing Akure North/South Federal Constituency of Ondo State should vacate his seat for defecting from Labour Party (LP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Babangida Cries Out Over Rise In Insurgent Attacks

Babangida obliged Nigerians to remain strong and united as the nation works tirelessly to end the incessant killings by members of the Islamic sect.

This call was made on Wednesday, July 15, in a Sallah message personally signed by him and titled: ‘Let us be strong and united against insurgency.’

He also advised the media to play down reports on cowardly activities of the sect, stressing that by so doing, the outlawed group is getting undue prominence.

He said:“At this stage of our national history especially with the insecurity we presently experience, it is appropriate for us to device new ways and means of confronting this hydra-headed insurgency, without making such initiatives public knowledge.

“Media intelligence is required in helping to assemble information and distilling such information in a manner that would benefit the fight against terrorism. Going by the news and information we get everyday, I feel very strongly that the media have a greater role to play in the management of information.
“The type of headlines and lead stories that are promoted in favour of the insurgents could only help to motivate members of Boko Haram rather than demotivate them. I expect, with a deep sense of patriotism, to see a greater deal of positive news promoted in support of military efforts in confronting this menace than a celebration of Boko Haram carnage, day in and day out.”

The former military president expressed high optimism that with his military background, President Muhammadu Buhari has relevant experience needed to tackle the insurgents.

He called for a more discrete information management system and well coordinated counter-terrorism approaches in the fight against the sect.

“Strategic efforts and initiatives of the military targeted at curtailing the spread of the Boko Haram activities should remain most often top secret within military hierarchy and the presidency. Collaborative efforts should also follow similar pattern so that little or limited information is let loose for the consumption of members of the sect.

“Coordinated efforts by the security agencies should be strengthened and refocused to gain new dimensions towards combating the unwholesome activities of this sect, and when such dimensions are sought and cultivated, they should remain the exclusive preserve of top military brass.

“Information management is very key to confronting an unconventional warfare such as the one under reference, which is further complicated by the unfashionable method of suicide bombings. It is a strange dimension to this whole exercise of insurgency and has further compounded our earlier strategies in helping to nip this monster in the bud.

“The media, it must be emphasised, have a greater role to play in this information management system where a well defined synergy is encouraged between members of the media and the military hierarchy.

“On a good day, as is often said, the idea of taking some Boko Haram suspects and prisoners to Anambra State, should not be public knowledge, if we are truly serious about information management.

“Each time we celebrate the dastardly acts of Boko Haram on the front pages of our newspapers and electronic platforms, it is a score for Boko Haram. We must weigh such information against our collective national interest.

“Do we subscribe to Boko Haram or to the Nigerian nation? Since we are of good consciences and subscribe to the Nigerian nation, military efforts and achievements in the fight against insurgency should be given primacy than what a suicide bomber has just done.

“We must make it a duty to encourage and motivate our military personnel; those who have died in the course of this struggle and those who are still there on the battle field trying to make the Nigerian society safe for all of us. The families of those who have lost their gallant fighters and bread winners must be catered for beyond the present tokenism. This initiative will serve as incentive to others who are still in the trenches battling to keep us safe,” he added.

Regarding President Buhari’s ability to bring the situation under control, he said: “Buhari as a military officer  understands the import of these altruistic suggestions and I trust that he will take steps to apply some of them that fit into the mainstream strategies already in place.

“I have implicit confidence in my mind that President Buhari, will put the final nail on the coffin of Boko Haram so that Nigeria can truly assume her greatness in the comity of nations.

“The approach has to be a holistic one, well coordinated with full onslaught launched by the day and night to rout these insurgents to surrender.”

The former leader expressed condolences to families of those who lost their beloved ones during the carnage, he commended government’s effort in helping to address the plights of the internally displaced persons across different locations in the country.

He assured the people that with help coming from the international community, Nigeria will be better placed to conquer the terrorists.

Babangida further expressed deep concern about the negative portrayal the activities of the sect is giving Islamic religion, insisting that Islam does not support the activities of the sect.

He therefore enjoined Islamic clerics to do more in their daily sermons to prevent new converts and recruits into this deadly group.

“For want of no discernible ideology, they have continued to portray Islam in very bad light, making members of other religions to perceive us with scorn. Islam, which I was born into, some 74 years ago, is a very peaceful religion that preaches brotherliness and togetherness.

“It is a religion that encourages love, affection and respect for our neighbours and mankind. It is one  religion that has an abiding influence on its adherents to cooperate with one another and promote peace in their respective communities.

May God touch the hearts of these insurgents so that the untoward act of bloodletting will permanently cease. Happy eid-el-fitri to all,” he added.

In a related report, the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) on Wednesday, July 15, condemned Boko Haram insurgency, saying, however, when it will finally end in Nigeria.

Man who ran away because his wife was expecting 3rd set of twins, returns home

Citizen Uche, the man who ran away from his family in February after his wife, Ruth informed him that she was having their third set of twins, has returned home. He returned home yesterday July 15.

According to The Nation, Emeka returned to their new house in Ogun state. The Uches, who were living in a dilapidated house in Agege prior to this coming out, have moved to a mini flat in Ogun state with the money she received from kindhearted Nigerians who came to her rescue.

Speaking about why he ran, the run-away father said;

"Like I told you on phone, it was not easy for me. I contemplated suicide on several occasions. I cannot believe I am here, holding my kids for the first time since they were born three months ago. When I left, I initially went to the village where I spent a month. After that, I came back to Lagos but stayed with my friend around Oko-Oba in Agege. I still live with him I know that I was not far from them, but I just did not went to return without a better solution on how to cater for my home. I was ashamed too to come back to that house to see them after I’d abandoned them and run away. But after our discussions and my wife told me that they had moved, I went to our old house and asked one of the neighbors who had been here for direction so that I could come and see them,” he said

His wife Ruth expressed gratitude to God and the Lagos state government for uplifting her family, saying that even her mother inlaw who never used to call her now calls her frequently

"Would I have ever lived in this kind of house with my family and I having a toilet and kitchen to ourselves? I moved in here on Sunday and I am so happy and grateful. Aunty, come and see our bedroom; have you seen the toilet? See our kitchen. See me now! I have a room and parlour self-contained. What more can I want, except for my husband to come and enjoy this good life with me? People who used to laugh at us for not having food to eat can now see how God works. Even my mother-in-law who has not called me for so long now calls me. I am just so thankful to God because he did not allow me and my children die in shame. I have promised God that I will do my best to grow my business. I want to grow and be able to help women with similar case as mine. I want to be able to impact their lives in future as my life was touched and changed.”she said

Ann Hay, 55, intervened when husband David and son Robbie fell out at a hotel in Queensland, Australia.

She was described as ‘a beautiful person’ by local councillor Gary Peoples, who added: ‘She loved her family to no end. I’ve never met a nicer person.’

Mrs Hay hit her head on the ground and initially got up and went home, but later fell into a coma after suffering an apparent brain injury. She was then taken to hospital on Saturday night but died yesterday, according to MailOnline.

Jackie Chan Is Now World's Second Highest Paid Actor

Jackie Chan landed 38th on Forbes' latest celebrity rich list, making him the second highest-paid actor in the world. While Chan hasn't starred in an American live action film in five years, he's pocketed an estimated 50 million USD over the past 12 months, second only to American actor Robert Downey Jr., who came in 8th place on the list with 80 million USD in earnings.

His latest film Dragonblade, which hasn't seen a US release yet despite starring big Hollywood names including Adrien Brody and John Cusack, grossed 120 million USD in China, and it's estimated that Chan took at least a 10 million USD cut. Chan-branded merchandise has also, as you can expect,
contributed massively to his fortune. The actor owns a Segway dealership and a chain of Cinemas named for him.

And as you may recall, the Jackie Chan Film and Television Academy opened its doors in Wuhan just a couple of months ago. “Jackie Chan is basically the Mickey Mouse of Chinese culture, a celebrity who is so omnipresent that his name has become shorthand,” Grady Hendrix, cofounder of the New York Asian Film

Festival, told Forbes. Forbes' Zack O'Malley explains: Since business success in China ultimately revolves around navigating or benefiting from the government, Chan has a secret weapon in all this earning: membership in the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, a hugely influential government board. Beijing green-lights all films released in China. It’s an increasingly powerful position. Chinese cinemas have grown at a nearly 33% rate over the past five years, generating just shy of $5 billion in 2014; in February China’s monthly box office receipts actually surpassed those in the U.S.

And while an American blockbuster can gross a quarter-billion dollars in China, the country’s powers-that-be often institute weeks-long blackouts of foreign films or slot them against one another on opening weekends. As a result Hollywood is turning to coproductions with Chinese companies, with Transformers:

Age Of Extinction and Iron Man 3 among the most successful examples. Forbes has estimated Chan's net worth to be around 350 million USD, although the star's publicity team has declined to confirm this. Boxers Floyd Mayweather (300 million USD) and Manny Pacquiano (160 million USD) topped this year's Forbes list, followed by Katy Perry (135 million USD) and radio host Howard Stern (95 million USD). - See more at: http://www.liveupdateinfo.blogspot.com/2015/07/jackie-chan-now-worlds-second-highest.html#sthash.qMaqwASs.dpuf

See How This Flying Car Landed On The Roof Of A House In Durban, South Africa (Photos)

If cars could fly I think has become reality. An emergency services firm ER24 told BBC that a driver drove over a ramp, and this led him to crash into the house in Kwamakhutha township.

He escaped injury, while a person sleeping in a room next to the one where the car landed was also unhurt, ER24 also added that no one was hurt.

Nigerian Troops Arrest Chibok Girls' Kidnap Leader

The Nigerian troops, who effected the arrest have revealed that the businessman is a member of a vigilante group that was infiltrated by the dreaded insurgents before effecting the infamous abduction of the school girls over a year ago.

According to Major-General Chris Olukolade, spokesperson of the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), the suspect was the head of a “terrorists’ intelligence cell” for Boko Haram under the guise of the self-defence youth vigilante group.

This Day also reports that soldiers told the Associated Press (AP) that some of their comrades belong to the extremist group.

“The arrest of the businessman … has also yielded some vital information and facilitated the arrest of other members of the terrorists’ intelligence cell who are women,” Olukolade was quoted to have said in a statement Tuesday night.

The DHQ spokesperson, who did not reveal when the arrests were made or how many people were arrested, alleged that Ya’ari has since 2011 coordinated several deadly attacks on Maiduguri, the birthplace of Boko Haram, and spearheaded the May 2014 assassination of the Emir of Gwoza, a religious and traditional ruler who was targeted for speaking out against Boko Haram’s extremism.

While some of the girls have escaped, there are many others within the camp of the insurgents as speculations are rife that some of these girls may have been converted to suicide bombers by the islamic sect.

Among other revelations by the defence troops was that of a woman arrested, Hafsat Bako, who confessed to coordinating the payroll for operatives paid a minimum of N10,000 a job.

In another development, Oby Ezekwesili, convener of the #BringBackOurGirls campaign, disclosed on Wednesday that she has been able to secure a meeting with president Muhammadu Buhari, to discuss how the remaining school girls would be released.
