American teenager murdered in Somalia seek answers

Ammar Abdirahman’s mother said she sent him from Minnesota to a Somali boarding school to protect him. The teen never returned home. Sent to Africa to be safe from gangs in Minnesota, Ammar was instead beaten and killed by locals in Somalia in May. His mother said the teen may have been targeted because he was American.
No formal homicide investigation has been launched and his family is still trying to obtain his remains.
“He was smart, he was inquisitive, he was asking questions,” said Omar Jamal, a community leader in Minnesota. “And for that, they tortured and killed him.”

The Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal on Wednesday affirmed the verdict of the Lagos State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal which upheld the declaration of Akinwunmi Ambode as the winner of the April 11, 2015 governorship election in Lagos State.

A landlord in the Idumota, Lagos Island area of Lagos State, Sola Solomon, has allegedly poured petrol and set fire to one of his tenants, identified simply as Abeeb, aka Ogbon.

Reporters learnt that as the victim struggled to put out the flames, the 67-year-old landlord pushed him down from the top floor of the three-storey building.

The father of one was said to have landed with a thud, as the flames ate through his body.

The mysterious death of a 29-year-old lady, Kemi Arobieke, who reportedly died while on a visit to a former Senior Special Assistant to Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, Bode Olugbore, is certainly raising serious dust as the family of the deceased are up in arms, demanding that the man tell them how she died.

             Reports have it that the lady who was an event planner in Lagos, was deep in the midst of planning for her wedding in November but lost her life while visiting her man friend on Saturday, August 8, after she left Lagos to Osogbo, the Osun State capital on Thursday to spend the weekend with Olugbore.

Her family however got a call on Sunday, August 9, that Arobieke had died in an accident but by the time they got to Osogbo, they realised that she was actually electrocuted in her lover boy's apartment and her
corpse had been deposited in a mortuary.........


But the family are crying foul, believing that their sister must have been murdered because there were tell-tale signs that could lend credence to that assertion.

A relative of deceased, however said the family would not take the explanation that she was electrocuted as being bandied by the police, believing that she must have been murdered.

The family source also said that the late Kemi had known Olugbore for about four years, but the family initially did not know about their relationship.

“My sister travelled to Osogbo and she was supposed to return to Lagos on Saturday, but we got a call from the police that she was involved in an accident and it was very serious.

When we got to Osogbo, the police prevented us from seeing her, but told us that she had been electrocuted by an electric fan, but it is unbelievable.

We were made to understand that she was electrocuted in the apartment by a standing fan. That is very hard for me to understand. The police showed us the fan, and it seemed to be working fine.

It was not burnt. The socket was not burnt. So, it is suspicious that she was electrocuted. The current in a fan is not enough to kill except one has direct contact with a live wire. The marks on her body suggested something contrary.

Right now, everyone is waiting for answers from the autopsy. We know that the man has been arrested by the police.”

Another family member took to social media to post this:

"I write this with a heavy heart the demise of my immediate younger sister, Kemi Arobieke who was murdered. On Thursday 6th of August, my sister left for Osogbo to see Bode Olugbore, the State Special Adviser to Governor Aregbesola, without telling anyone only for us to get a call on the 8th, Saturday, that she had died in an accident in Osogbo.

The police asked us to come immediately that it was tragic. We got to Osogbo in the night but was told to wait for the DPO the next morning. We got the shocker on Sunday that my beloved sister was electrocuted. We went to the mortuary where we discovered that she was not electrocuted but murdered.

Autopsy and Postmortem was to be carried out at LAUTECH. My fear is that the result has been tampered with in their favor. Bode Olugbore who is married with 3 kids, has not told us the family what really happened to our sister, who was planning her wedding in November."

Bank of New York Mellon to pay $15 Million fine for giving internships

The American SEC said Tuesday that the Bank of New York Mellon has been fined for giving internships to the children of government officials linked with a Middle Eastern sovereign wealth fund in an alleged effort to win business.

               The bank has agreed to pay a $14.8 million penalty to settle charges that it violated anti-bribery and internal accounting controls provisions of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act in 2010 and 2011, without admitting or denying wrongdoing.
"We are pleased to reach an agreement with the SEC that allows us to put this matter behind us. As the SEC noted, we cooperated with the SEC throughout this process and had already taken steps to enhance our existing internal controls and procedures with respect to our internship and hiring practices," a bank spokesperson was quoted a saying in a statement.

BNY Mellon gave internships in Europe to the son and nephew of one unnamed government official and to the son of another unnamed official, according to the SEC's order. The Middle Eastern country of the sovereign wealth fund was not named in the order by the SEC.

            The SEC alleged that the bank gave the children internships because they "sought to corruptly influence foreign officials in order to retain and win business managing and servicing the assets of a Middle Eastern sovereign wealth fund."

The statement also says the government officials first approached bank in February 2010 about internships.

In its order, the SEC also published email correspondence between officials of the bank purporting to show the importance of the internships being granted.

Two women have made military history after becoming the first female soldiers to pass the U.S. Army's grueling Ranger Course, the Army said on Monday.

             The two, along with 94 men, passed the 62-day leadership course, which teaches students "how to overcome fatigue, hunger, and stress to lead Soldiers during small unit combat operations," it said in a statement.

In April, 19 women and 381 men began the first Army Ranger school that included women. The course, based at Fort Benning, Georgia, includes training in woodlands, mountainous terrain and Florida swampland.

Army Rangers are rapidly deployable troops trained for mountain, desert and swamp terrain and often go after special operations targets.

"Highlights of the course include a physical fitness test consisting of 49 push-ups, 59 sit-ups, a five mile run in 40 minutes, and six chin-ups; a swim test; a land navigation test; a 12-mile foot march in three hours; several obstacle courses; four days of military mountaineering; three parachute jumps; four air assaults on helicopters; multiple rubber boat movements; and 27 days of mock combat patrols," the statement said.

A graduation ceremony will be held at Fort Benning on Friday.

The U.S. military began a process two years ago to open thousands of frontline combat jobs to women. The service branches have been developing gender-neutral requirements for all jobs in the military and evaluating whether to recommend that any remain closed to women.

                The Army had faced resistance to allowing women to serve in combat units, but since such experience is a factor in promotions and job advancement in the military, women have had greater difficulty than men in moving up to the top ranks, officials have said.

About 90 percent of senior Army infantry officers qualified as Rangers, which should allow women graduates to better compete with their male counterparts.

Nearly 12 percent of U.S. forces deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan were women. They represented about 2 percent of U.S. military deaths in those wars.

In the US death toll from California mid-air collision rises to five

The death toll from a mid-air collision between an executive jet used by military contractor BAE Systems Inc and a small plane over Southern California on Sunday has risen to five, according to a fire department spokesman.

              The fiery crash left debris and bodies scattered over more than a mile (1.6 km) and sparked brush fires in the area where the wreckage landed near the U.S border with Mexico, San Diego-based Cal Fire Division Chief Nick Schuler said on Monday.

A twin-engine Sabreliner crashed with a single-engine Cessna 172 at around 11 a.m. on Sunday some two miles (3 km) from Brown Field Airport in San Diego County, Schuler said.


The jet was on a training mission with the U.S. Navy, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigator Andrew Swick said. He said the Cessna pilot was practicing so-called "touch and goes," or fast-paced, take-offs and landings.

Four of the dead were traveling on the Sabreliner, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner. The fifth victim was the pilot of the Cessna, which had no known passengers, the examiner's office said.

BAE Systems, a British-based military contractor, on Monday named three employees who were on the Sabreliner.

Carlos Palos, John Kovach and Jeff Percy died in the crash, along with an unidentified contractor, the company said. A spokesman said the three were based in Mojave, California.

NUC - 11 Nigerian Universities Are Substandard

The National Universities Commission, NUC, on Thursday denied 11 private universities operating in Nigeria full operational licenses for their inability to meet set standards three years after they were issued provisional licenses.

Speaking at the presentation of the full operational licenses to nine other private universities, the NUC Executive Secretary, Julius Okojie, said the 11 affected private universities were given two years to get their full operational licenses, but failed to get in in three.

UEFA Made Final Nomination Of The Best Player Of The Year.

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo will have a chance to defend his  UEFA Best Player Award after he was nominated for this year's award.

US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton turns in private email servers following scandal

Hillary Clinton has taken another step in an attempt to kill off an email scandal and "pledged to cooperate with the government's security inquiry."

               CNN and other outlets reported on Tuesday, quoting a campaign spokesperson, that Clinton has asked her attorney to give the US Justice Department her private email server and a thumb drive of work-related emails from her time as secretary of state.

Nick Merrill, Clinton spokesman spoke to CNN late Tuesday and said the candidate "pledged to cooperate with the government's security inquiry," and would "continue to address" any other questions surrounding emails exchanged during her tenure as secretary of state.
Clinton's use of a private email account linked to a server in her New York home for her work as America's top diplomat was revealed in March and drew criticism from political opponents who accused her of sidestepping transparency and record-keeping laws. It has led to questions over whether classified information was improperly handled on the “homebrew” browser.

A Belgian model has accused Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois of cheating with her on his long term girlfriend and Spanish beauty, Marta Dominguez.

Emily Vanhoutte said he had a short fling with the Belgium international before last year’s FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

This is not the first time Courtois has been accused of cheating on his girlfriend.

In October 2014, the former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper was reported to have had a fling with a waitress, Jeny Sanchez whom she met a line.

He was also accused of dating the ex-girlfriend of his Belgium national teammate Kevin De Bruyne.

The relationship reportedly went without the knowledge of De Bruyne.

Donald Sterling has sued celebrity gossip site, TMZ and his famous ex mistress, V. Stiviano over the recording of his off-color remarks that cost him ownership of the Los Angeles Clippers basketball team.

The embattled billionaire filed the lawsuit on Friday, August 7 in a Los Angeles Superior Court accusing TMZ and Stiviano of violating his privacy and causing damage on a “scale of unparalleled and unprecedented magnitude.”

Mr. Sterling, said in the lawsuit that the “illicit” recordings were secretly made and provided to TMZ by Stiviano “and/or her agents'' despite Stiviano insisting that Sterling consented to recordings she made on phones while they carried on a sexless relationship.
Attorney Mac Nehoray, who represented Stiviano in the previous lawsuit, said Sterling doesn’t have a claim to privacy because his insensitive remarks were made in front of Stiviano’s sister. ''It’s ridiculous if he says he was damaged by it when he made $2 billion. I think he’s just a litigious person. Unless he has something going on in the public eye, he can’t exist,'' Nehoray said.

The suit is the latest salvo in a legal soap opera that began in April 2014 after the recording caused a firestorm of criticism when the real estate baron was heard whining to Stiviano that she shouldn’t associate with black people.

              As a result, Donald was banned by the NBA and ultimately led Sterling’s estranged wife to sell the team owned by a family trust to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer for a record $2 billion. Shelly Sterling won court approval for the sale by showing her husband of six decades had dementia and couldn’t handle his business affairs.

The latest suit was lodged two days after Donald Sterling filed for divorce from his wife just weeks shy of their 60th anniversary.

The crash has been confirmed by the southwest spokesman of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ibrahim Farinloye.

“It is true but NEMA has not receive distress alert from the chopper on its mission control centre yet,” Farinloye said.

“We have Maritime Distress Alert only about a ship around Warri in Delta State, rescue agencies are on their way to the scene,” he added.

The casualty figure was provided by the Nigerian Television Authority(NTA) via Twitter.

Los Angeles authorities decided to drop 96 million “shade balls” into the 75-acre reservoir which made many media sources and citizens surprised.

However there is a quite simple explanation to it. That was made to protect water.

Daily Mail explained: “They balls work by floating on the surface and blocking the sun rays to prevent the water from evaporating. By doing this, they also prevent the chemical reaction that creates the carcinogenic compound bromate.”

According to the estimates it is not a cheap plan. One ball costs 36 cents while 96 mln cost about  $32.6 mln. However it is  expected to save $250 million when compared to other, similar techniques to protect the water.

Man mistakenly calls 911 while robbing a home

       

    Authorities say a man planning a burglary inadvertently dialed 911, allowing dispatchers to listen in on his conversation. Somerset County prosecutors say Branchburg police received the errant call on July 27, but were unsure of the caller's location.

 They learned that the phone number had recently been assigned to 42-year-old Scott Esser.

Esser was arrested on Wednesday, after he allegedly entered a Stafford Township home. He's now charged with that burglary and others in Branchburg and Berkeley Heights.


Authorities say the Branchburg robbery occurred the same day Esser allegedly made the inadvertent phone call.

Esser's bail was set at $100,000 and it wasn't known Saturday if he has retained an attorney.

Armed robbers snatch Mohammed Babangida's wife's car in Kaduna

The police source explained that the armed robbers forcibly snatched her car at gunpoint before taking away unspecified amounts of money and other valuables from her.


The source told SaharaReporters that the armed robbers had probably followed Mrs. Babangida before they stole her vehicle. It was also learned that in addition to her car, the robbers stole an official rifle belonging to a member of her security detail.

Our Anti-Corruption War Not Selective - Osinbajo

Nigeria’s Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has commented on the accusations that Muhammadu Buhari’s administration has launched a selective anti-corruption war targeted at Goodluck Jonathan’s former government.

Earlier this week some Peoples Democratic Party senators alleged that the process lacked fairness and transparency and had become a witch-hunt.

Osinbajo, however, dismissed the allegations as he spoke during a recent interview held in Ogun state.


The politician was quoted a saying by Vanguard:

“It is not about a probe of a past government, that’s not what this is about. We are talking about our future, we are saying that we must put in place a clear strategy going forward.

“It is not just about ensuring that people are made to pay for looting the treasury, our system of justice must be fair to ensure that anybody who does anything that is wrong is brought to account. We can’t allow impunity to continue. So it is not about the previous government, its about any form of impunity.”

Osibanjo also blasted critics saying their position was far from the truth. He assured Nigerians that the anti-graft war was a genuine programme to tackle the lingering problem in the country.

Another scandal has recently broken on the matter. At the end of July it was revealed by a source close to the president that Buhari had been given a list with the names of oil thieves by the US officials. The news generated many reactions, with Nigerians seeking the punishment of the corrupt individuals.

However, another source at the US embassy told a reporter they were unaware of any exchange of documents between the leaders of the two countries.

As for the official first-hand information, President Buhari said his government had taken steps to identify financial institutions and countries where the looted funds had been lodged.
