Electoral body to recruit 325 ad hoc staff for Assembly bye-election


The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Sokoto State, is to recruit 325 ad hoc staff for the state House of Assembly bye-election for Tureta constituency fixed for August 20.
This information is contained in a statement signed by Mallam Muhammad Musa, the INEC Head of Voter Education, on Friday, in Sokoto.
The statement said that the bye-election had become necessary, following the vacancy created by the resignation of the former member representing the constituency, Alhaji Aliyu Abubakar.

Nigerian troops capture more towns from terrorists


Troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE in the North-East have captured Kareto town from Boko Haram terrorists.
This is contained in a statement signed by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Kukasheka Usman.
Kukasheka said the town was liberated from the insurgents on July 25.
He said the exercise was in continuation with clearance operation of the remnants of the Boko Haram terrorists hibernating in remote border towns and villages.

The deputy chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Chris Azubogo has said that Abdulmumin Jibrin disappeared with the 2016 budget.

Avengers, Arepo militants are common criminals - Ijaw leaders


Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has disowned Niger Delta Avengers and the Arepo militants in Lagos and Ogun states, saying they are common criminals.

EFCC on wild goose chase in Ekiti –Fayose


Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose yesterday alleged that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is on wild goose chase and called on the anti-graft agency to beam its searchlight on other states in the country.
Featuring on a live radio programme in Akure, Ondo State, Fayose said: “The EFCC is now harassing banks in Ekiti State, seeking for records of government and chasing contractors, claiming that the contractors gave me kickback.

“They are on vendetta mission. They said I collected money from Dasuki and I have told them that I did not collect a dime from Dasuki. I have N300 million in my fixed deposit account in Zenith Bank and I declared it in my Assets Declaration Form

Drug trafficking: Indonesia executes three Nigerians by firing squad


Indonesia yesterday executed three Nigerians and one Indonesian out of 14 on death row for drugs crimes by firing squad.
The remaining 10 are expected to be put to death in the coming days, according to BBC. At press time, the government was yet to confirm which of the prisoners have been put to death.  However, an official quoted by the AFP news agency said they were three Nigerians and an Indonesian. They were executed shortly after midnight local time.
The Community Legal Aid Institute, which advocates for the convicts, had earlier said the convicts facing execution were four Indonesians, six Nigerians, two Zimbabweans, one Indian and one Pakistani.  Local and international human rights groups

Police, DSS avert bloody clash in Abuja


A combined  team from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) commands of the police, Department of State Service (DSS) and National Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), yesterday averted a bloody clash at the  Wuye ultra-modern market in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).
Trouble started as early as 8am when traders under the aegis of Association of Wuye Ultra-modern Market Allottees (AWUMA), armed with a court judgement, stormed the market to take possession. They were allegedly resisted by  thugs  aided  by the market developers.

Kano govt says ex-governor paid thugs to disrupt Saturday election


Kano State government has accused the former governor of the state, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso of plotting to to disrupt next Saturday’s state House of Assembly by-election in Minjibir.
Kwankwaso and his supporters are planning to unleash violence during the rescheduled election, the Commissioner for Information, Youth, Sports and Culture, Malam Muhammad Garba, said in a statement.

The by-election was re-scheduled for Saturday, August 6, after the attempt to conduct the poll in April abruptly ended due to violence.
The statement said: “Information at our disposal suggested that Kwankwaso has hired thugs from neighbouring Niger Republic, Katsina and Jigawa states to unleash mayhem on electorate, with the aim of scuttling the entire process for his selfish reasons.

Man abandons wife, rescues mother from flood


A Chinese man is facing backlash on social media following a spur-of-the-moment decision he made when faced with a grave situation. According to reports, the man identified as Gao Fengshou, decided to save his mother first before saving his wife and children, when their province was hit by a deadly flood on July 20. CBN orders banks to write off hard currency bad debts


THE Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has discovered a steep rise in hard currency debts in the nation’s banks following its revised guidelines on the operations of the Nigerian Inter-bank foreign exchange market.
Consequently, it has or­dered banks to write off all the delinquent loans in line with its Prudential Guidelines for Deposit Money Banks in Ni­geria of July 1, 2010.

Elrufai raises 9-man white paper committee


Gov. Nasiru El-Rufai of Kaduna State has set up a nine-man committee to produce a white paper on the report of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the Army/Shiites clash in the state.
The Army/Shiites clash in Zaria last December had left many people dead.
This is contained in a statement issued by Mr Samuel Aruwan, Media aide to the governor, in Kaduna on Wednesday.

We have capacity to flush out militants - Army


The Joint Military Force deployed to the Niger Delta, Operation Delta Safe has restated its preparedness to deal with the renewed violence by militants in the oil-rich Niger Delta region.
Rear Admiral Joseph Okojie, Commander of the operation, made this known at a news conference in Yenagoa on Wednesday, July 27.
Okojie said that the military had capacity to flush out militants but were compelled to respect the dialogue option adopted by the Federal Government.
The Defence Headquarters had scaled down military option and declared a ceasefire to pave way for dialogue with the militants.

'We'll bring Nigeria's economy to zero,' Group vows


The Niger Delta Avengers has alleged that the ongoing dialogue between the Federal Government and some militants in Niger Delta is a ploy to launch a military offensive in the region.
The group said President Muhammadu Buhari should intensify efforts in the exploration of oil in the North East, adding that it will not allow the government export a drop of crude oil from the Niger Delta.

Ancelotti: Bayern Munich's transfer business done

Medical group fears famine in northeast Nigeria; calls for UN food pipeline


Severely malnourished children are dying in large numbers in northeast Nigeria, the former stronghold of Boko Haram militants where food supplies are close to running out, Medecins Sans Frontieres said on Wednesday.
The medical charity, also known as Doctors Without Borders, urged the United Nations to set up emergency food transports to the area, where up to 800,000 civilians have been cut off for over a year, it said

Robber beaten, stripped ... by angry mob (photos)



According to a report, the robber and his gang had been terrorizing residents in the village for months before he was captured by youths of the community. Reps invite EFCC, ICPC to probe Dogara, Jibrin, others


Following the budget padding allegations leveled against the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, and three other principal officers, the low chamber has said it will investigate the shocking revelations.

The sacked former Chairman, Committee on Appropriation, Mr. Abdulmumin Jibrin of the House had alleged that Dogara and others plotted to insert over N284 billion in the 2016 budget in the name of constituency  projects among others.

Buhari commissions Abuja–Kaduna rail


President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, commissioned the $1.457 billion Abuja-Kaduna rail services. The president said the federal government would link all states and commercial centres in the country with rail lines. The president later took a train ride from Idu to Kubwa, a suburb of Abuja.
The 186.5 km standard gauge track built by the China Railway Construction Corporation has double lines. The Abuja-Kaduna route has nine stations and the train can travel at up to 150 km per hour.

Meanwhile, Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, has expressed confidence that the Abuja–Kaduna railway service will decongest the overpopulated Federal Capital Territory (FCT), arguing that employees can live in Kaduna and work in Abuja.

Develop N’Delta region or divide Nigeria –Avengers


The Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) has warned the Federal Government to develop its region or we divide Nigeria.

No lip service to rule of law -Osinbajo


Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, yesterday, reaffirmed the commitment of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to rule of law, attributing many of the problems in the society today to non-adherence to it.
This came as the National Assembly plans to review laws on standardisation to make the operations of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) in tune with the global practice.

The vice president, who was represented by his adviser on rule of law, Mr. Gbolahan Adeniran, at the public presentation of a book written by the Acting Director General of SON, Dr. Paul Angya, said SON would be given all the necessary support to enforce standards in the country.
“We are in an administration that would not want to pay lip service to rule of law. There is nothing we can get right without rule of law; so we would support SON in the enforcement of standards,” Osinbajo stated.

Borno IDPs protest inadequate food supply


Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Bama, Borno State, yesterday complained about the quantity of food supplied them in their camp by the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
The displaced persons reportedly voiced their grievances when members of the House of Representatives Committee on IDPs visited the camp.
A spokesman of the IDPs, Mallam Bukar Kolo, told the legislators that they were faced with acute food shortages at the camp.
“We were happy when the camp management abolished the centralised cooking system last week due to our complaints. But the introduction of household cooking has not solved the problem,’’ Kolo said.

Imo North re-run: No electoral violence – CP


The Imo State Commissioner of Police,  Mr. Taiwo Lakanu said there was no electoral violence during the Imo North Senatorial poll.
Lakanu,  who stated this yesterday in a press statement signed by  the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Andrew Enwerem, however, admitted that there were minor skirmishes by overzealous party supporters which the police was able to quell.

Osinbajo again assures, Buhari will energise economy


Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, has assured for the upteenth time that the  N500 billion Social Investment programmes of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration will energise the economy and deal with issues of poverty in the country.
He gave the assurance when he had audience with a delegation of the Muslim Lawyers Association at the Presidential Villa, yesterday.
According to him, the social investment programmes would train people, create jobs, feed schoolchildren from homegrown farming and grant soft loans to traders, artisans and market women.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has faulted the recent statement by the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, that the army would use force on militants if they fail to embrace the proposed peace offering from the Federal Government.
Buratai had made the declaration on Monday, July 25, while speaking at the inauguration of the newly built ultra-modern 2 brigade headquarters complex and Olympic-sized swimming pool in Port-Harcourt, Rivers state.

The army chief, who was represented by the General Officer commanding, 82 division,  Ibrahim Attahiru, had said: “Government is still committed to dialogue and where this cannot go on – then there could be resort to other means.”

Militants invade community, 3 policemen shot in gun battle


Three policemen attached to the Igando Police Division and two residents identified as Baba Victor and Adedokun were wounded in the gun battle.
The gunmen were said to have stormed the community around 6a.m through the waterways behind the Pacific Estate, Ikejiobi Avenue, Ewedogbon - they looted shops in the estate.
The police officers swung into action shortly after the incident was reported. One of them was shot in the head during the shootout but survived the attack, report said.
It was also reported that some the residents, who were earlier abducted by the militants, escaped during the shootout.

Teen girl gang-raped to death by the same man twice


The teen’s parents told police that she was tied up with rope, forced to drink chemichals and was actually abused by five men with a woman in the group of people who held her captive.
According to local media, the incident occured because the abuser was out on bail awaiting trial for his first rape of the teenager.

Veteran apala singer Ayinla Omowura's son Akeem dies


The entertainment industry has lost a veteran Apala exponent, Alhaji Akeem Ayinla Omowura. Alhaji Akeem was the eldest son of the late Apala maestro Alhaji Ayinla Omowura. A truck crushed a tricycle rider to death in the Mushin area of Lagos


A truck driver Femi Adewale has crushed a tricycle rider to death on Sunday in the Mushin area of Lagos. The 30 year old man was said to be heading for Ibese in Ikorordu, when the incident that left the tricycle rider dead  happened at about 6:30am.  an eyewitness only identified as Nurudeen Akintunde, saying: ” The truck with full speed suddenly rammed into the tricycle and the rider was forcefully thrown out of the marwa.

How we raised over N500bn shared in June – FIRS Chairman


Chairman, Joint Tax Board (JTB) and Executive Chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Babatunde Fowler, has explained how the Federal Government raised over N500 billion distributed at the Federation  Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) in June.
Fowler said yesterday in Abeokuta, Ogun State, when he led 36 state chairmen of the State Board of Internal Revenue (SBIR) to the state Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, that 70 per cent of the N500 billion came from non-oil sources while only 30 per cent came from oil sources. It was the first time in 2016 that the Federal Government shared over N500 billion among the three tiers of government during the Federation  Accounts  Allocation Committee (FAAC) meeting.
“We are proud of the development and we tell ourselves that this is the time to fund the budget of the Federal Government from non-oil sources,” Fowler said.

PDP chair: Why Sherrif was rejected –Dokpesi


NATIONAL chairmanship aspirant of the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP), Chief Raymond Dokpesi yesterday in Asaba, Delta State explained why the party rejected former Governor of Bornu State, Ali Modu Sheriff as chairman.
Dokpesi who took his campaign to Delta State delegates to the forthcoming National Convention of the party in Port Harcourt said Sheriff had a little baggage associated with the dreaded insurgent group, Boko Haram.
“Sheriff has a little bit of baggage because from where he came from, he is not supported. Boko Haram is a major reason our son, Goodluck Jonathan lost the last presidential election. So there was no need for us to bring somebody associated with Boko Haram to represent us if we wish to reclaim the presidency in 2019,” he said.

Anxiety as police recover CBN ID, used bullets in abandoned vehicles


OPERATIVES of the Special Anti Robbery and Anti-kidnapping Squad of the Kogi State Police Command yesterday mounted  an intensive search for the occupants of two vehicles abandoned by the roadside along the Lokoja-Abuja Highway.
The vehicles, a Mercedes Benz E230 bearing registration number ABC758LT and Peugeot 307 with number plate, GWA614BR, were reportedly found close to Karara village in the state  by police operatives acting on a tip-off at about 3: pm on Sunday.

reorters learnt that when a search was conducted on the vehicles, the operatives recovered in one of them, a Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) identity card bearing the name,  Umar Garuba and 25 expended shells of AK47 ammunition.

Buhari welcomes FIFA anti-corruption reforms


President Muhammadu Buhari has welcomed FIFA’s President, Gianni Infantino plans to reform the game through transparency, anti-corruption and good governance.
He ‎assured that his administration would pay keen interest to accountability and transparency to fast-track football development in the country.
This was even, as the FIFA President, Gianni Infantino noted that there was  no crisis in football management in Nigeria, noting that there was an elected president in place, who is already functioning.
Buhari, who received the FIFA President,  Infantino, and the Secretary-General, Fatima Samuora at State House challenged football administrators in the country to fashion out strategic programmes to develop the game.

Buhari orders NNPC to intensify oil search in N’East


President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered for intense search for hydrocarbon prospects in Chad Basin and the North Eastern part of Nigeria.
The President’s directive is coming on the heels of the fruitless search for oil in the region with $1 billions spent without commercial discovery of crude oil.
Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr. Maikanti Baru, made the disclosure Monday, while receiving the Governor of Bauchi State, Mallam Mohammed Abubakar, during a courtesy visit to the NNPC Towers in Abuja.
Baru informed that the renewed search for hydrocarbon deposits in the Chad Basin would entail extensive probing of some allocated and non-allocated oil blocks in the region with a view to establishing the magnitude of their deposits.
